Recognition and awards
Providence St. Vincent Medical Center has made Thompson Reuters’ annual “Top 100 Cardiovascular Hospitals” list for 2009. This is the third year for Providence St. Vincent and it’s an honor to be among many other high-achieving medical centers.
“Top performing hospitals continue to see a drop in inpatient heart attack mortality rates – good news for the whole industry,” says Jean Chenowith, senior vice-president of performance improvement at Thomson Reuters.
Outcomes
ST Elevated Myocardial Infarction (STEMI) transfer system is available to patients who need acute intervention in a cardiovascular laboratory, often coming from rural or non-cath lab medical centers. For questions or comments about the STEMI transfer system, please call Marla Craft at 503-216-2070.
Providence St. Vincent and Providence Portland medical centers have services for acute intervention. Physicians and staff work closely with the emergency medical system to promote rapid diagnosis and transport to a cardiovascular laboratory. Components of the STEMI transfer system include:
- Immediate access to a cardiologist
- Cardiologist and interventional teams available 24/7
- Feedback and outcome review with each case
Blood conservation is a key quality initiative by cardiac surgeons at Providence. Current medical literature recommends minimizing the use of blood products by reducing morbidity and mortality for cardiac surgery patients. Even after patients have been risk-adjusted, the evidence for transfusion-associated risk is clear (Critical Care Medicine 2006, Vol. 34, No. 6; Circulation 2007, 116:2544).
Our cardiac surgeons are supporting best practices by providing recommendations and protocols to minimize blood use. For questions about blood conservation strategies and outcomes, call Diane Reiner at 503-216-8033.
Coronary intervention results are shared with our providers on an ongoing basis to review clinical cases, coronary interventions, medication use and patient demographics. See STEMI and NSTEMI outcomes from the third quarter of 2009. The complete report is available by calling Jeanne Zerr at Regional Providence Heart and Vascular Data Services, 503-216-7184.
